PHILADELPHIA · THE COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK

Logan Square.

Logan Square combines the Benjamin Franklin Parkway’s cultural landscape with the office and residential fabric of northwestern Center City. Broad views and large institutions distinguish it from Philadelphia’s more tightly enclosed rowhouse neighborhoods.

GET YOUR BEARINGS

More than a name on the map.

The Franklin Institute and Barnes Foundation offer very different museum experiences within the same area. The Institute emphasizes interactive science, while the Barnes arranges art in ensembles that reward sustained looking. Plan one as the main event, then use Logan Circle and the Parkway to understand how the neighborhood connects monumental public space with everyday downtown streets.

THE EVERYDAY PICTURE

The streets. The rhythm. The practical details.

Architecture & atmosphere

Large civic buildings, office towers and apartment buildings share the area with smaller residential streets. The Parkway’s diagonal and wide intersections make the street pattern feel more open and less uniform.

Getting around

Downtown rail and bus connections provide access, followed by a walk to the museums. Map the museum entrance and Parkway crossings rather than relying only on the building’s address.

Make your visit count

Pick an indoor anchor for the day and leave breathing room for the walk between large blocks. Check admission arrangements and entrances beforehand. If considering a home, compare the Parkway frontage with interior streets and the route you would actually take to work or transit.

A QUESTION TO BRING WITH YOU

Would a Parkway outlook or a smaller street nearer your daily downtown destinations suit you better?
