PHILADELPHIA · THE COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK

Fairmount.

Fairmount pairs a residential street grid with unusually large cultural landmarks. Fairmount Avenue links neighborhood dining to Eastern State Penitentiary, while the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Schuylkill-side recreation shape the area’s western outlook.

More than a name on the map.

Eastern State’s stone walls interrupt the scale of the surrounding blocks and provide a clear orientation point. Its interpretation of imprisonment makes a substantial museum visit. At the Philadelphia Museum of Art, galleries and the monumental building offer another kind of destination. Leave time between them to see the residential streets that actually connect these attractions.

THE EVERYDAY PICTURE

The streets. The rhythm. The practical details.

Architecture & atmosphere

Brick rowhouses and corner businesses contrast with the prison’s high walls and the museum’s monumental setting. Fairmount Avenue feels different from the smaller residential blocks branching away from it.

Getting around

The B subway runs along Broad Street at the eastern side; buses extend into the neighborhood. Choose your arrival point around the museum or residential destination.

Make your visit count

Choose one museum as the anchor rather than rushing through two. Add a walk along Fairmount Avenue and a loop on nearby side streets. If evaluating a home, separately test its connection to Broad Street transit and to the river-side destinations.

A QUESTION TO BRING WITH YOU

Would you rather be near the museum and river side or closer to Broad Street connections?
