PHILADELPHIA · THE COMMUNITY NOTEBOOK
Chestnut Hill centers on Germantown Avenue’s shops and older buildings at Philadelphia’s northwestern edge. Woodmere, Morris Arboretum & Gardens and smaller neighborhood greens add distinct reasons to explore beyond the commercial street, with two Regional Rail lines serving the area.

The avenue is a natural first route, but Chestnut Hill works best as more than one outing. A shopping walk can include Pastorius Park, while Woodmere and Morris Arboretum deserve time of their own. The relationship between the commercial spine, residential streets and larger cultural landscapes is more revealing than any single storefront stop.

Stone buildings, leafy residential streets and the avenue’s textured paving establish a strong historic setting. Gardens, museum grounds and the pond landscape at Pastorius Park introduce softer spaces between built-up stretches.
Chestnut Hill East and Chestnut Hill West provide Regional Rail access. Choose the terminus and onward route for your destination; larger garden visits need separate planning.
Choose either an avenue-and-park loop or a longer garden visit for your first outing. Check which Woodmere building holds the exhibition you want. If arriving by train, map the walk to your final stop before deciding where to begin and finish.
